BENTON COUNTY CANINE CONTROL
Type: Civic/Public
Location: Kennewick, Washington
Benton County hired MMEC to design an addition to their overcrowded Canine Shelter in Kennewick, WA. The original program was generic, in that budget was the driving factor for the County. Working with the team in pre-design, we learned that the most important thing for the shelter’s director was space to add as many interior and exterior kennels as possible, in order to help more abandoned and neglected dogs. The design consisted of a 2,266 new building adjacent to the existing shelter, along with some renovations in the existing building. The resulting project increased the outdoor area from 4 kennel spaces to 17 with covers for protection from weather, 32 indoor kennels to 58 indoor kennels, with a separated room for dangerous dogs and an increase from 2 quarantine rooms to 4 rooms, within their own space. The addition is now available for the care of even more abandoned dogs.
